About Us

The Hollywood Gives Back and Stars Give Back initiatives were created by the Hollywood Humanitarian Council which is co-chaired by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and President of East Timor, Dr. Jose Ramos-Horta, "The New York Times" best selling author and founder of the Hollywood Film Festival® and Hollywood Awards®, Carlos de Abreu, and Oscar winning screenwriter and director, Paul Haggis.

The Hollywood Humanitarian Council mandate is to give a voice to the voiceless through the visual medium, highlighting social and human conditions worldwide, and to recognize people and organizations that have contributed to the betterment of their communities or society at large.

CAUSES: Yearly the Hollywood Humanitarian Council identifies up to 10 causes that are dedicated to Education, Environment, Health and Human Rights and focus on highlighting those same causes. 


 In addition, the Hollywood Humanitarian Council provides for the Hollywood Humanitarian Symposium Committee and the Hollywood Humanitarian Selection Committee. The Symposiums take place during the Hollywood Film Festival® and include screenings and panel discussions showcasing important social and humanitarian themes. The Humanitarian Selection Committee chooses the recipient(s) of the yearly Hollywood Humanitarian Awards®, which are bestowed during the Hollywood Awards® Gala Ceremony in October in Hollywood, California.

Prior years' Hollywood Humanitarian Awards® honorees include Nobel Peace Prize winner and President of East Timor, Dr. Jose Ramos-Horta, Nobel Laureate Jody Williams, Father Rick Frechette and actor and activist Sean Penn.

Afghan soldier "kills two NATO troops" at protests
